My friend Sandra Parker has been a media pal for nearly 20 years. Her work on WVEC 13 News is known the region over (though if you didn't know, she whips up a mean crepe when working at Baker's Crust each year for Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads Celebrity Night). I love gizmos, so when she asked me to try out a new product called the "Music Bullet" you know this consumer was game!

You see the segment each week on 13 News. It's called "Does It Work." Sandra asks folks like you and me to test an item, and short of being asked to review the Popiel Pocket Fisherman or the latest-greatest Ginsu knives assortment, the "Music Bullet" was right up my alley. Basically it is a rather small cone-shaped item that plugs into your PDA. Just use the earphone or ear-bud jack and you are set. This thing is barely bigger than a large Grada A egg, but when you push a couple of catch-releases around the base, boing!...you really can hear the BASS! A mini-vertical woofer floats your favorite Frank, Fun or Fleetwood Mac to your ears. I even pulled up my Bob-FM app on my iPhone and Holly, Jay and the music sounded awesome. It's got plenty of high end and honestly, for it's size, it puts off some pretty full tunage. It's no Pocket Bose system, but it doesn't put you back 500 bills either. Plus, it has this nifty spring-loaded retractable plug line. SWEET! I'd love it more if it came with its own protective case, but at under $15, I gotta say...Yes, it DOES work! I'm gonna go get my own at Bed, Bath and Bob-FM

If you wanna check out the segment, and check out my double-chin...feel free to follow this link: http://www.wvec.com/news/does-it-work/Does-It-Work-music-bullet--151536865.html

Don't tell me you have nothing to do this weekend except to see the Avengers. Believe me, the movie is still gonna be at the Behemoth-Plex for most of the summer. What won't be are four outstanding events that you can take Mom to to celebrate her weekend...and it is her WEEKEND...not just one day!

For the Mom who needs a few cross checks and some time in the penalty box, catch the Norfolk Admirals as they look to wrap up round two of the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup. Up 3-2 on the Connecticut Whale, Friday night at Scope is gonna be insane with a shot for the Admirals to seal the deal to the next round on our own ice and in front of the folks that are the backdrop of an AMAZING season. Game 6 is at 7:30pm with Game 7 slated for Sunday (we don't need no stinking Game 7!). Got to http://www.norfolkadmirals.com for tickets and more. Go Admirals!

For the Mom who needs some custom art from far and wide, take her to the 42nd Annual Gosport Art Festival in Olde Towne Portsmouth. Over 150 artists on display with great food, music and more. It is juried show, so the art is always amazing. This was a tradition for my mom Karen, who would encourage you to make it a family day in a magical place. More information at http://www.gosportartsfestival.com.

And for the Mom who just can't get enough Kourambiethes, Koulourakia, Kataifi, Karithopita or a dozen other Greek treats that start with a K, don't miss the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral's Norfolk Greek Festival on through Sunday night. Music, dancing, laughter, community...oh and the FOOD! There is even a drive through! Get the menu and more information at http://www.norfolkgreekfestival.com. Oh, and save me some Loukoumades!

So there you go...Bob-FM to the rescue with all kinds of options to the explosive earth-ending threats of Loki. You already know who is going to win! If they don't, how is Marvel gonna pull of another dozen blockbuster sequels?

Diary Of A Wimpy Smell-The 10th Life Of A Cat

I've been house-sitting a cat. His name is Blue. He is about 30 human years old. Ok, maybe not quite that old, but he is REALLY old. He is obviously beyond the nine lives he was originally given at the Friskies Buffet Birthing Center. And to be honest, I've really been garage-sitting him, as in his elder years, his propensity - or shall I call it "propensipee" - to make foul deposits in any house he lives in or visits necessitates an area that requires an endorsement deal with Febreeze.

Sadly, about two weeks ago, Blue disappeared. Trying to pinpoint a time has been though, though some friends had come over on that day and were getting something out of the garage when quite possibly Blue took a powder. My friends really can't imagine Blue, not exact as stealty as a Cat Burgler, would have slipped the surly bonds of the garage in the limited time they were in there. That left only one likely answer. (Gulp!) Blue had perhaps not only slipped the surly bonds of the garage, but the surly bonds of earth as well.

Well, we searched everywhere...or at least we though we did. While there are typically many nooks and crannies in a garage, we knew the possibility that Blue may have been extra tricky in finding his exit portal. That is why when we entered the garage in the beginning of week two of BlueSearch 2012, we were not totally surprised at the ungodly odor wafting about. Colby and I agreed later that after baseball practice, we would have to double our search efforts and put fresh batteries in the flashlight. But when we got into my Saab and headed out, it seemed the smell was traveling WITH us. :-( Immediately I thought the worst. I had heard of animals seeking out a warm engine block to cuddle up with. When we returned home, we parked outside of the garage and entered by foot to see if the smell was still in the large space. It was nowhere to be smelled. I therefore lifted the hood of the car to see if the mystery would sadly be solved with a glance. IT WAS NOT. Soooo, I made plans to go see my friendly Saab service guy so he could put the car on a lift and check out the whole picture, because THE SMELL was worse than the time I left a pound of frozen shrimp in the back of my Eagle Talon the year I moved here! Well wouldn't you know...I helped look myself, and there was no cat where the engine's at!

While truly relieved, the plot was now significantly thick. I drove back home to remove every item from the trunk, under the seats, inside the well where the convertible roof goes when I really need to air things out (and I REALLY NEEDED TO AIR THINGS OUT!)...and no sign of the ancient Catfucius. Some of the things I removed, including my computer backpack, I took into my house. I needed to work on my computer, so there in the living room, I withdrew it from the leather pouch. Within a few minutes, I started smelling traces of that stench! I picked up my backpack and started sniffing...and there it was! No, the cat had not gotten into the bag! It wasn't the cat at all! There in a side pocket, was a Polly-O cheese stick. How old was it? I had to have put it there months ago as a snack! And now, rancid and decaying, the plastic sheath separating it from the world in which we live and breath had been BREACHED! I plunged my hand into the pocket and pulled out the vile cylinder just to be sure it was the culprit. JUST TO BE SURE??? My fatal flaw was touching it without the protection of latex gloves. Having become a fan of one of Colby's favorite books, "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid" I was quite aware of the mistake I had made.

I had THE CHEESE TOUCH! And not only that, my living room was now in need of the coveted Frebreeze endorsement! It took days for the freshness to return to the room, heck, for the whole downstairs for that matter. And no matter what I used to sterilize my hands, the Cheese Touch would not relent. I even tried grinding the smell from my hands with a bar of Lava soap. Finally after a whole week, and an entire canister of Axe body spray, I feel cheese-free.

As for Blue? Sadly that part of the mystery remains, though my heart tells me he safely made it over the Rainbow Bridge. But if he is enjoying his 10th life at the neighbor's house, it is likely because he found something more tasty than Friskies Buffet.

Have a great week my friends, and remember you can get all kinds of odd Bobservations in life when you follow me on Twitter @TheGameWorden. Thanks for turning your knob...to Bob!

Well they certainly are not the Hunger Games, but man are the stakes high for our Amazing Admirals. Norfolk begins their quest for the Calder Cup when the AHL Eastern Playoffs get underway this Friday and Saturday night at Scope. The Admirals, riding a professional hockey record 28-game winning streak host the Manchester Monarchs to open the best of five opening series.

Friday night, join me at Scope as Bob-FM night will bring you a shot at some cool stuff. Keep listening for your shot at free tickets on Bob-FM. Just tune into me in the morning, Holly during the No-Repeat 9-5 Workday, and on your drive home with Jay West.

Oddly, even though the Admirals are sporting the best record in the entire AHL, granting them home-ice advantage for the entire playoffs, we actually will have to win the series on the road, even if we win the first two at home. Scope is tied up for the Virginia Arts Festival's International Tattoo, so what I'm saying is DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE SOME NOISE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY!

Tickets are available online at http://www.norfolkadmirals.com. Our boys are ARMED AND READY to continue this streak and bring the Calder Cup back to Norfolk! If you can't make it, follow me on Twitter @TheGameWorden. I'll keep you up to date on the game as we go! Come on! Join me at Scope this weekend, and look for the Bob-FM table on the concourse inside to pick up some cool Bob schwag.

Everybody loves a good story, and thanks to a vital local charity, you get 10 to choose from, all while helping to break the cycle of homelessness in Hampton Roads.

For those who have witnessed a poetry slam, you can get the idea behind a kind of "story slam" that took place at Night of the Iguana on Saturday the 11th of February. I was honored to accept the invitation to host an event called "...And That's My Story" for my friends at ForKids, a non-profit that gives a helping hand to many neighbors who are struggling in these difficult economic times. In addition, organizer Kim Fink and CEO Thaler McCormick invited me to be one of the 10 storytellers. Others who were invited included nationally known musician and composer B.J. Leiderman, humorist Hope Mihalop, Virginian Pilot Publisher Maurice Jones, Rabbi Michael Panitz, and Hugh Copeland of the Hurrah Players. The event was streamed live on the internet, and the individual story videos are now online for all to view. You can see them at the ForKids website, http://www.homesforkids.org. If you want to hear my story, you can also go straight to YouTube and enter "Worden Story" into the search engine. The idea is to "vote" for your favorite storyteller. Votes are only $1 apiece. You can make a difference through links from both sites. Voting will continue through February 26th. So tweet this link and share this story with your linked-in pals and Facebook friends!

Oh, and a friendly reminder...after all this IS an election year. VOTE FOR ME!

Everyone loves a story that inspires, but what is playing out today for Tim Tebow, one should know a little background to the miracle that marks his life well beyond an heroic 80-yard winning touchdown pass in overtime.

Granted, the amazing game at Mile High against the highly-touted Steelers was unreal. Critics blasted the Broncs all week at the thought that they deserved home-field advantage at 8-8 over the 12-4 Steelers. The press was haunting the Denver lefty, questioning whether after a late-season losing streak that Tebow may be benched, despite the fact that he got them to the dance. But the war has been won for this young man for many many years...long before he was a Heisman winner and held up the Coaches trophy for the college national championship as a Florida Gator. In the event you do not know his REAL story, let me post for you the letter forwarded to me by one of Bob's most dedicated listeners, Jennifer K. of Chesapeake. She is a teacher. She is a parent. And she believes.

Pam’s Story

"In a recent email, I read about a woman named Pam, who knows the pain of considering abortion. More than 24 years ago, she and her husband Bob were serving as missionaries to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in contaminated food or drink. She went into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant.

Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused to terminate her pregnancy and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.

While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider the devastating alternative. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband: If you will give us a son, I’ll name him Timothy and I’ll make him a preacher.

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam’s youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father’s ministry in the Philippines . He also plays football. Pam’s son is Tim Tebow.

The University of Florida star quarterback became the first sophomore in history to win college football’s highest award, the Heisman Trophy. His current role as quarterback of the Denver Broncos has provided an incredible platform for Christian witness. As a result, he is being called The Mile-High Messiah."

Parting the Steel Curtain is just the latest miracle for this young man. Turns out he is one.

Jennifer loves New Orleans, but should Brees and the boys fall, I'm sure she'll be pulling for the Broncos. Who dat? Why it's #15 Tim Tebow.

Believe!

Just one more! Now that we are beyond Halloween, get ready for the holiday onslaught. Soon your smartphone, laptop, tablet and tv will be filled with images of St. Nick, eight tiny reindeer and the Hermie the dentist. Heck, MacArthur already has holiday decor hanging from the rafters and Mary Barnett's has started adorning her storefront with those beautiful holiday wreathes, complete with tiny white lights. But before you swap out the inflatable Jack-O-Lantern out front with and lifesize Leg Lamp, I wanted to share one last Halloween image.

Here's a shot of my boy Colby as the lead man in Guitar Wars, Darth Brooks...the singing Dark Lord. Filling the Death Star muzak system with "Friends In Low Places" and sporting tattoos of Tatooine. Just so you know, his guitar is tuned to play the usually ominous Darth theme music, but somehow it sounds rather friendly when plucked on a beat-up 6-string.

Gotta love our kids

Sam Hundley, who does an amazing job on his illustrations for the pilot, stepped out from behind his drawing board and settled down instead to a keyboard. The photo that accompanies this little strip of horror is eye-catching but creepy. A doll soured by years of attic neglect...cracked from decades of searing summer heat and frozen winter still. Once loved by a young girl, but forgotten and left instead to bugs and beasts we don't want to know about that live just below the roofline of our homes. Certainly all dolls don't meet this miserable fate? Mine don't. Well, let me say my ACTION FIGURES dont! (E-dub? Dolls???) Vintage G.I. Joe still lives out in the open with many of my 60's toys. It's part of my retro decor. Wanna give your morning guy a hard time because I didn't blow up my army men and run my Hotwheels throught the mud like you did. Go right ahead, I could put my 11 year-old Colby through college if I put it all on Craig's List or eBay. But wait. Yes I do have a doll. A ghostly one named Casper. Certainly the "friendly ghost" could not be considered "creepy." His eyes are not hollow, his arms and legs are intact and in fact, his pull string still works! Admit it. You had one too. Terry cloth outer layer with a hard plastic face...eyes still in place and peering at you via a non-threateningly side glance. I used to wonder if it was a risk displaying him at my cool pad, but when I saw an interview with the brilliant John Lassiter of Pixar Animation fame, I knew it was a cool thing. There, behind his toy-filled desk on the Disney lot was his own Casper, along with many of the toys that inspired the immortal first Toy Story epic. Somehow I couldn't imagine Casper ever becoming a moth-eaten husk of my childhood memories...Or could it? I took a picture for my blog entry, but now that I look at it, the lighting may be changing my mind! Does he look a little creepy to you?

Happy Halloween!

You gotta know how much I love it when the arts community comes together for an amazing event. Well tonight at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, it's your chance to enjoy a doozie of a soiree at the 5th annual Art d' Vine, a wine and art celebration featuring wines and brews from the Pacific Northwest!

When I got an email a few months ago from Gayle Mosher from the Center, she asked if I'd like to participate, knowing I was an Oregon native. You gotta know some tasty Pinots will be part of the mix tonight, as well as some of the finest Oregon craft beers. Of course I accepted! Especially when she asked if I might consider making a piece of my custom GameWorden art for the auction. Here is your chance to have your favorite morning guy's artwork in your home or office! Using the the event theme as inspiration, I created one of my "guitART" pieces that can hang handsomely on your wall! Basically, I find beat up acoustic guitars at thrift stores and use them as a canvas. Instead of paint however, I use foils from the necks of wine bottles. I reverse-emboss words that follow a theme for each guitART, and affix the foils to the guitar with an industrial staple gun! Crazy huh? The effect is cool though (at least I hope YOU think so), as it has a look of a unique metal quilt. The theme of this piece is...what else?...WINE!

Art d'Vine gets underway tonight with the Sponsor's Reception at 6:00pm at the center. 110 W. Finney Ave. in downtown Suffolk. The Wine Celebration and Silent Auction begins at 7pm and the Live Auction is at 8:30pm. I hope these pictures do the art justice and give you just a glimpse of the fun in store tonight at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. Get more information online at http://www.SuffolkCenter.org, or call 757-923-0003 for directions or more information. If you are spending time in Suffolk this weekend for Peanut Festival, begin your time with Art d'Vine!

Cheers!

Light A Candle for 9/11

This month is of course on the minds of us all. Hard to believe 10 years have passed since the attacks on the WTC Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the heroic acts that prevented a fourth strike ending in a field in Pennsylvania. In the aftermath, I co-wrote a song called "Light A Candle" with my friend Michael Goldberg. It was produced locally by Robb Torgler, founder of the wildly popular band Butter. My lyrics will say much as to the meaning of the song, but Michael's music and the amazing vocals of two then-15 year old girls (Natalie Prass and Adrianne Warren) was a statement of hope sung by children for children. Though many if not most of today's primary and middle-school students were too young to understand, or simply not born yet, 9/11 may be a kind of mystery that everyone speaks loudly about. The images make it easy for all ages to understand it was a very hard time for our country. But the unity it brought was unprecedented, and with so much being done this week in remembrance of that day, we are all encouraged to find ways to "Make a Difference." For a child it can start with something very simple and symbolic. Light a Candle. For remembrance is so important, and after 10 years, it is more important than ever to continually keep the families who lost loved ones in our hearts and prayers...the first responders and those who make it a living putting themselves at risk for our safety...fire, police, EMT, military...we need to still thank them every day on the street...fly the flag...a multifaceted eternal flame of thanks and hope.

"Light A Candle" was written for our Non-Profit educational program "Magic - The State of the Arts," a PBS award-winning program utilizing music, art and the internet to make learning fun. While this song was more serious than many in the program, it addressed the fears children had following the tragedy. It was created to help kids dialogue with parents, teachers, and other children as to why "bad" things have to happen sometimes. How to find a way to better understand what 9/11 was about. How to strive together to find healing. Played and sung in classes, kids then could create art reflecting the feelings the song and the event stirred. A colorful catharsis to healing. For a copy of this song or more information on this song, and the dozens of other tunes written in correlation with the SOLs designed to help get better test scores and make learning fun for kids of all ages, please email me at eric@937bobfm.com. An mp3 of "Light A Candle" can be heard on the Virginia Beach Public Schools website at http://www.vbschools.com.

Please read these lyrics. Please share them with your kids and others you love.

"Light A Candle"
Music: Michael Goldberg
Lyrics: Eric Worden

The sun doesn't always shine
As brightly as it could
And sometimes the way we feel
Isn't always good . . . or understood

On a morning, when the sky was so blue and so clear
Four eagles . . . flying high in the air
Then a storm-wind blows . . . but wherever they go
Have no fear

Light a candle when you're feeling afraid
Light a candle for the price we've paid
Let us sing a serenade . . .
We will never let our sunlight fade
Light a candle for the volunteers
Light a candle for each and every tear
All across the hemispheres
Let the voice of freedom fill our cheers!

It's okay to be happy or sad
It's okay to cry
It's natural to feel angry and mad
There's no "good" in goodbye . . . keep askin' "Why?"

On a morning, when the sky is so blue and so clear
Four eagles . . . flying high in the air
Then clouds appear . . . but your friends are here
Have no fear

Light a candle when you're feeling alone
Light a candle for the many unknown
Though it chills us to the bone
Say a prayer in each and every home
Light a candle for the home of the brave
Light a candle for the souls that they saved
The very lives these heroes gave
Fly the flag and let Old Glory wave!

Why is it people will do bad things?
They can't destroy all that goodness brings
What are we gonna do? (child questions?)
We'll be protecting you (parents/teachers reassure)
Fear is invisible
We're indivisible
Talkin' 'bout liberty
And don't forget justice for all
Hear the eagles call

Light a candle for every name
Light a candle for the fears you tame
It may never be the same
Candle be an eternal flame
Light a candle the world can see
Light a candle for unity
From sea to shining sea

Man, Hollywood has certainly been enjoying a cash cow with their continued string of box office smashes on the coat tails of all your favorite super heroes. Who knew when back in the 70's that Chris Reeve would start a trend that would gain momentum with every Comic Blockbuster. Certainly for every success like Superman, Batman and Spiderman, come some feeble attempts too (did someone say Flash Gordon?), but with this year's Green Hornet, Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America and more, imagine what it would be like meeting a writer responsible for building legends like The God Of Thunder. Well, lovers of truth, justice and the American way...here's your chance!

Two doors down from Cogans just south of 20th on Colonial St. in Ghent, you'll find Local Heroes Comics. Cool place with cool stuff, especially for the young at heart. Lots of classics to indies to peruse and a great staff to help you find what you need. Greg from Local Heroes dropped me an email note the other day that outlines a real bonus coming up for any comic fan. They announced that Jonathan Hickman will be appearing at the store this Saturday from 3-6pm. Jonathan currently writes Fantastic Four (FF), SHIELD, Secret Warriors and the upcoming Ultimates relaunch from Marvel Comics. He also has a backlist of creator-owned books from Image Comics that I understand are all amazing reads (Nightly News, Pax Romana, Transhuman, Red Mass for Mars). He will be available Saturday to sign books and talk comics! How cool is that? On top of that, they will also have free Pizza from Cogans and tons of door prizes and giveaways

Hey, you could be meeting the next Stan Lee! Get more info at http://www.localheroescomics.com.

Madison is a growing teenager dealing with most of the tough stuff the teen years bring. Madison also deals with something nearly no one has to deal with. Neurofibromatosis. Though diagnoses can vary, NF has a wide range of symptoms. In essence, neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. Madison has had several surgeries and knows quite well the path that four year-old Mia Rashkind may have as her struggle with the disease continues. But both girls can benefit big time tonight at the Red Mill Commons location of Buffalo Wild Wings.

Mia has two brain tumors, which were just recently found to be stable. This is of course after series after series of chemo, medication, MRIs and other doctor’s visits. She is being raised by her single father Danny. He runs marathons to raise money for research for a cure. This is done for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Upon hearing about this brave and inspirational little girls story, and how much she loves Buffalo Wild Wings, Buffalo Wild Wings (Red Mill) and Virginia Surf, Skate & Snow (VAS3/VAScubed) got together to raise money to help out. A raffle is being held for a one of a kind custom surfboard from VAS3 (retail about $700). A portion of this goes to The Children’s Tumor Foundation. The tickets are being sold now at the Red Mill BWW location. The drawing is tonight between 6-9 pm. The plan is to have little Mia draw the winning ticket. Also tonight, 10% of all food sales at BWW Red Mill will go to The Children’s Tumor Foundation. Another side note is that Mia has a facebook page in which she is trying to get 1 million fans for a cure for NF; she already has over 12,000 (pretty impressive for 4 years old). You can check it out Mia's story with this link to her FB page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/VAScubed/193144997366045#!/pages/Can-Mia-get-1000000-fans-to-raise-awarness-of-Neurofibromatosis/352074198785.
I have been a big fan of the Ghent Business District for years. On Colley I'm a big fan of the Cantina, Bella Pizza, Starbucks, Fair Grounds, Texture, Kelly's, San Antonio Sams, Red Dog, The Naro, Ynot, Harbor Gallery, No Frill, Green Onion, Donut Dinette, Azar's, The Skinny Dip and the new location for Luna Maya. And 21st is exploding with great shops and restaurants. Baker's Crust, Bardo, Moe's, Katana, Decorum, The Quality Shop, NYFO, Total Wine, Five Guys, Changes, Jakes's Place, Levin's, The Boot. Yoga. Thrift Stores. My point is, there is a lot to choose from, and you know by my morning show that I love variety.

Well, I got a fun email from my friend Tarrena at the the one Ghent business I do business with every day (AAAA Storage on 22nd St.) that will reward you for doing business with our neighbor merchants in Ghent. It's a Scavenger Hunt to support local business. Coming up this Saturday (6/11), participants will be given a map listing businesses where you can get clues. It's free to participate and there is some cash to be won! I hear $500 for the grand prize, $250 to the runner-up, and consolation prizes for all other participants. It all starts at 10am and should be all wrapped up by 1pm.

For information, call Tarrena at 757-625-3057 or email her at aaaa22ndstreet@verizon.net. Come on out...have some fun...and win some cash! Then use some of it to go eat at Doumar's...or Pasha Mezze...or Jersey Mikes...or...The Boot...or...Cogan's, or the Belmont, or Shucks, or Charlie's, or Dog N Burger!

Keep it strong. Keep it local!

A Classic Is A Classic

Like music, anything that is a classic has stood the test of time. Yesterday while dropping by 7-Eleven for a Slurpee with Colby, I saw a display of old school candies. It was like Bob had programmed a tune for me to play that I hadn't heard in years!

Now for the Worden boys, a stop at a convenience store is not typically for the sweet, but the salty. It's baseball season after all, so a beverage and some seeds are right in our wheelhouse, but there they were...Neccos, wax soda bottles and BIG HUNK. The glands started going crazy as my mouth anticipated that vanilla-flavored nougat and fresh peanuts. Colby questioned my fascination as I grabbed a bar and proceeded to quiz him about the treat. Have you had one of these??? Ever??? He of course had not and I easily understood that I have not had one in the whole of his lifetime. I rung it up alongside Colby's graveyard Slurpee (yes some beverage classics never change either) and continued to swallow hard as my saliva glands continued to fill my mouth in anticipation of the flavor reunion. More than anything, I wanted to use the movie function of my iPhone to capture Colby's inaugural BIG HUNK bite. What would his reaction be? How would he handle the stretchy challenge of just how much to break off? My mind was entirely focused. Granted, when I first saw the vintage candy display, my brain hyper-jumped to a land of Good N Plenty, Marathon Bars and Pixy Stix. Beemans, Fruit Stripe and ropes of Bubs Daddy gum. And remember Freshen Up Gum? The gum that goes Squirt!! Where was I?

Now in the car I smacked the bar on the dashboard, then unwrapped the slab down to the clean break. Colby had to wonder "what the heck?" but I explained it was kind of like Silly Putty. Pull it apart fast and it breaks. Pull it slowly and it stretches. Same with a BIG HUNK. Smack it and it breaks into smaller pieces, but when you bite into it and pull, it's gonna streeeeetttttccchhhhhh. It was time for his first bite. I could hardly wait myself, but I prepared my iPhone and rolled. He bit in...pulled...and pulled more. His jaws worked the nougat slowly at first, but as it dissolved into that vanilla and peanut goodness, his smile came. I asked on a scale of 1-10 how it was. HE GAVE IT A 9!!!! That's my boy! I quickly followed suit, cramming my whole half into the gaping maw so I could show him how to properly make a mouthguard with a large portion. This is the ridiculous part I SHOULD have recorded on my iPhone, but I neglected to incriminate myself in this You Tube world. Certainly not as scandalous as Weinergate, but you don't need to see your morning guy playing with his food. And BIG HUNK is a food...not a fat free food (only 3 grams!) but gluten free!

Anybody know where I can find some banana flavord KITS? Ouch! The thought of it makes my teeth hurt!

Amazing thing watching your kids graduate. I watched Saturday as my second of three children turned the tassel and thus began a new chapter of life. Helena Peyton Brown, just 2 years old, tan and toddling on the sand at Duck-In just yesterday, is now a young woman with the future at her feet. I'm sure hundreds of you are playing out the same scenario at this time. For some, it is the sad reality of the empty nest, and a new direction for the parents as well.

For those in attendance at Peyton's commencement, we were treated to some words of wisdom from LTG William G. Boykin, a highly decorated 36-year Special-Ops retired Army man. His focus was on "choices" that lay ahead. That really is what it is all about though isn't it? It defines us in the long run. The backbone of integrity. We can only hope for their sakes and our own that the good choices far outweigh the bad ones. I think as we hear words like this, it is important for us to allow the words to creep back into our own minds, as these are tough times. Times that require more and more selflessness and determination. Blessed with two great jobs and wonderful friends and family, it is interesting for me to look back and see how it all fell into place. I guess it always does, but one cannot believe that luck was ever the prevailing reason for the way life's fortunes roll. Jobs are tough to come by and tough to keep, but you will have the biggest hand in finding and defining that fortune...for richness in life is much more than what dollars can buy. Hold your faith and your family close as you walk forward. We will be watching...and helping along the way. What ever you dream. Believe. Good luck grads. I've said it many times before, but it still applies. Success is the quality of the journey.

Yippee!!!

I know you probably get tired of reading about my little guy's exploits...but I felt the need to mention Colbie, not Colby this time around.

As the weekend approaches, there are some great musical options, but Colbie Caillat won't be one of them for a few more weeks. The Busch Gardens Live concert series is another good one this year, and with Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Pat Benatar and Neil Sedaka scheduled, there's lots of great music in store with regular park admission. The series opener with Ms. Caillat has been delayed though from this weekend to the weekend of July 23rd and 24th. Just something to take note of in the event you were looking to catch the beautiful Grammy winner this weekend. Check http://www.buschgardens.com/va for further updates and information, including the Glory At The Gardens series as well. Mercy Me, Casting Crowns and Toby Mac head up the series, and it gets underway this weekend for sure!

In the meantime, I suggest you get your musical fill at this weekend's Patriotic Festival at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The 5th St. Mainstage will be the place to be. Headliners include Steel Pulse on Friday, The Beach Boys celebrate 50 years in rock and roll on Saturday night, and Hootie's Darius Rucker wraps up the festival on Sunday night. Let's extend the love from Memorial Day and thank our military by showing our patriotism through music on the sand. Tickets are now on sale for INXS at the Ntelos Pavilion August 12th. Get concert dates 24/7 at http://www.937bobfm.com.

Ever since my son Andrew sent me a picture of the Walgreens at 21st and Colley a few years back, me and my boys are always looking for business signs that make us chuckle. What was funny about the Walgreens sign? Well, the photo was taken at dusk, and the lights were out in the "W" and "a" letters...making it algreens. Being a fan of Al Green, I had to laugh out loud. Colby actually surmised that because of the economic downturn, people are slower to replace bulbs in their outdoor signs. Maybe it's just too darn difficult. Such must be the case at the Bank of America building in downtown Norfolk, as the "A" and the "m" in America are out on the east wall of the highrise. For at least three weeks now, it has been the Bank of erica.

Of course nine times out of ten, the outage doesn't lead to a real word at all, but when it does, we just get a kick out of it. Among those that have caught my eye in the past few months include the "Sherato" hotel next to our home here at Dominion Tower, "Fir ston" a popular place for tires over off of Olney and Granby, and "st" which is all that remains lit at our favorite Sushi bar, Sai Gai Japanese Steakhouse at Ward's Corner. To this day, nothing can come close to "algreens," though a pass by Hall Automotive one night from the Western Freeway yielded a chuckle, as the two "l's" were missing, leaving just "Ha." I know, it's obvious I was desperate for a blog topic this morning, but silly stuff happens all around us every day. If you see some outdoor signs that need some illuminating, snap a shot with your smartphone and email it to me. I'll post it here! eric@937bobfm.com. In the meantime, I'm banking on the last "a" to flicker out on the B of A sign. Thus the Bank of eric would be born! Now THAT would be some serious customer service .

Last weekend was full of drama at Indy and at the Coca Cola 600 for Nascar. Turn four never took such a toll. At Indy, Dan Wheldon led one lap...but it was the one that mattered most, as the leader hit the wall heading toward the homestretch. At Charlotte, Jr. finally looked like a winner, but he ran out of gas with 1000 feet to go and Kevin Harvick screamed by for his third Sprint Cup win of the season. But at American Indoor Karting at Lynnhaven, the Worden boys were flawless in taking numerous checkered flags!

You no doubt have heard about AIK on Bob-FM. Formerly located on Airline Blvd. in Portsmouth, they gave up the old vacant grocery store for a former movie theater right next to Lynnhaven Mall. Talk about cool! Adults and kids alike can have a blast sliding around the corners and blasting down the straits in real open-wheel excitement. On the weekends, adults race adults and kids race kids, but during the week, they have special nights when kids and parents can race at the same time. Safety is always top priority, but it's still really competitive, complete with spin-outs, and screaming engines. What's really cool is that each lap is timed, plus you get to choose your track name. I was MavEric, and believe me, I felt like I was flying an F-16. Colby drove against three of his best pals as we were there celebrating his 11th birthday. The boys' dads raced against me. AWESOME!!! Who needs Danica when your own adrenaline is pushing you to the limit. Each race was long too! The adults averaged 19 laps each time. Man do you get your money's worth! What a great idea for a birthday, corporate gathering, or just to supersize your Hot Wheels fetish! Father's Day is coming up kids, and this would be a cool thing for dad. Locations in Richmond and Fredericksburg could also be great destinations during your summer trips out of town. Find the Beach link at http://www.americanindoorkarting.com.

Start your engines!

Locations in Richmond and Fredericksburg could also be great destinations during your summer trips out of town. Find the Beach link at http://www.americanindoorkarting.com.

Fitting Memorial And Honor

I just wanted to drop a line in this entry to thank all of our military families, past, present and future. The many tributes to our military over the Memorial Day weekend continue to remind us of the amazing gift our armed forces gives us. Freedom. My heart was stirred by the many soldiers' letters that were read by my pastor Michael Simone at Spring Branch Community Church. There are several ways each community reaches out to say thank you to those in uniform, and I'd like to dedicate today's blog to the Chrysler Museum's efforts on behalf of our military families.

More than 1,300 museums across America will offer free admission to military personnel and their families again this summer as part of the Blue Star Museums program, a Blue Star Museums initiative in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. This free admission benefit is available to all active-duty military personnel, National Guard, Reserve and their families from Memorial Day to Labor Day 2011. The complete list of participating museums is available at http://www.BlueStarFam.org and http://www.nea.gov/national/bluestarmuseums.

At the Chrysler Museum of Art, military families will enjoy free admission to the Museum’s 62 galleries in addition to a special exhibition, Curious George Saves the Day: The Art of Margret and H. A. Rey, which is on view until September 18. The exhibition recounts the hair-raising tale of how Margret and H. A. Rey, the German Jews who created the mischievous monkey, fled Nazi Europe for the safety of the United States. Nearly 80 original drawings, book mock-ups, personal photographs and documents, as well as a multimedia touch-screen timeline, reveal the dramatic story of escape and survival that became the basis for the best-selling fiction series for children. The story and exhibition appeal to all ages. For exhibitions, programming and special events, visit http://www.chrysler.org or call (757) 664-6200.

Freedom isn't free, but for you military families, glad to know this opportunity is on the house. Thank you again...and thank you Chrysler Museum.

Ok, so we all recognize how much technology is shaping our lives for now and forever, but I got a taste yesterday of something that was goofy, but I will remember always. And a bison was involved.

My daughter Peyton is graduating next week from First Baptist Christian School in Suffolk. Her last day of class was last week. This week the "senior trip" has taken her west to Utah and Wyoming. Yesterday afternoon I received a text from her stating she was at Yellowstone and that I should log onto the "Geyser Cam" placed in proximity to Old Faithful. She had no idea where the cam was, but a guide must have mentioned to her that there was one, so I logged on and sure enough, found the link through a Google search. The shot was a really wide angle and was not continuous like the Eagle Cam which has gotten so much exposure at Norfolk Botanical Gardens. This view refreshed about every 15 or 20 seconds and featured what appeared to be black and white stills. I'm thinking, gosh, you would think the National Park Service could at least afford a camera with color resolution. IT WAS COLOR. It looked black and white because IT WAS SNOWING. Outside here, it was a smoking 94 degrees, and at geyser central, it was sub-freezing with flurries. I called Peyton on the phone and told her we had a lock on the cam-view but felt it was a needle-in-the-haystack chance of finding her. The website showed there were numerous cameras set up all over the park, but as I began to describe some of the surroundings and some of the garments I saw people in my view wearing, Peyton eventually was able to identify the same people. I asked her to move to the foreground where she might appear to be slightly bigger, as the angle of this camera was so wide, people really looked mostly like large ants. Once I felt the mini blob I was looking at was my daughter, I asked her to walk over and touch a little sign post not far from the path to the geyser. Sure enough, 15 seconds later, I got a still of a person standing next to the post. I had found my girl. I then had her step into the middle of the path and WAVE!!! She said she felt like a dork, but did it anyway. When she did, and was captured doing so by the Geyser Cam, I snapped my own still on my iPhone. So there I was, watching my daughter live on the web as she meandered through the falling flakes in the shadow of Old Faithful's billowing steam. So cool!

Naturally our excitement over the moment had to wrap up, as she needed to...uh...wrap up (literally). She was freezing! She continued to send me picture texts of some of the amazing sights, including a snow-covered bison mere feet from their car. Sheesh! Exciting...but kind of scary. Don't feed the natives Peyton. They don't care if you are a graduate. They just think you look really tasty!

Proud of you.

Today is my youngest son's eleventh birthday. Colby has been mentioned in this blog several times, as have my other two kids. Being the youngest though, there is a special timer in both of us that tug at each other. His is racing along, not wanting to wait until he is bigger and one in me that I wish would allow him to remain smaller. Our growing children are the biggest source of our pride, or at least should be. For you parents still trying to find your purpose in life, this is it. Being a dad is bigger than me. Bigger than my wonderful jobs. Bigger than my artistic abilities and endeavors. Lucky for me, it's my favorite thing.

Having my oldest grow up, go to college, get married and begin a family is an obvious reminder that I am getting older. But having two younger kids gives all of us a strong feeling of being young at heart, and I do...heck this job keeps me in the flow of "now" enough to know my life is a long ways from the stagnant state that allows aging to get a better grip. But now my daughter is graduating in mere days and will be off to college in fall, and my "little" boy is far from little anymore. When Colby turned six, I marked the day of his birth with a poem called "5 Days 'Till 6." I knew six was a big new chapter. First grade was coming. I hoped to follow a year later with "6 Days 'Till 7" and keep it going every year as a unique way to tell him how much I love him. Last year as we approached another big new chapter...double digits...I wrote "9 Days 'Till 10." Well, now the teen years are coming into view a little more. Another reminder that time waits for no one. But it's all good, cuz this kid makes me feel 18 again.

Happy Birthday son

"10 Days 'Till 11"

Could it be a full year
Since I thanked God in Heaven?
We cannot be here.
10 Days Till 11

A few inches taller
His body still revvin.'
I wish you were smaller.
9 Days Till 11

Can't we go back?
To nine? eight? Or Seven?
He's on the fast track.
8 Days Till 11

Eating bacon, he's stoked.
I'm afraid it's not Kevin.
Applewood smoked.
7 Days Till 11

A sports triple-threat.
An All-Star I reckon.
He's not finished yet.
6 Days Till 11

Teen years are in sight
When colleges beckon.
He's my David Wright.
5 Days Till 11

Gets gigs with his voice.
A job with each session.
He's my only choice.
4 Days Till 11

"Mini Me" he is called.
My own reflection.
But size won't be stalled.
3 Days Till 11

By George I am proud.
He's my Elroy Jetson.
I'm screaming out loud.
2 Days till 11

Time is a teacher.
But time is a felon.
There's no double feature.
1 Day till 11

So goodbye to 10.
In a new age you'll delve.
We'll meet here again.
When it's 11 Days Till 12

Love, Dad

I've been a long-time supporter of the MS Society. I put in more than a decade of service on the MS 150 bike ride and have met many friends who deal day-to-day with this debilitating disease. Well, the ride is coming up next weekend, and with today being World MS Day...here's a cool deal for you if you have a hankering to hop on your Cannondale and ride for a great cause.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease. It is one of the most common disabling neurological conditions amongst young adults in the northern hemisphere. Over 2,000,000 people in the world have MS. The aims of world MS day are to raise awareness and mobilise the global movement.

To celebrate World MS Day, our local MS office is offering FREE registration today only for Bike MS (formerly the MS 150) up on the Eastern Shore. Just visit FACEBOOK for the Secret Code! For those who think the 150 miles to Camp Silver Beach and back is a bit far, you can do the One-Day ride on Saturday the 4th. The One-Day Ride is a 60 mile route that begins and ends at Camp Silver Beach. If you'd like to experience the great outdoors, register for our Two-Day Ride that leaves out of Cape Charles! Cabin lodging and the Eastern Shore Hotels are full, but Tent Camping is always available! I understand registrations are at an all time high! Here's a deal for you...If you sign up for the ride...I PROMISE to sponsor you. Just email me at eric@937bobfm.com. I'M NOT KIDDING! It's a great cause and the local MS staff works so hard for this event, it's my pleasure to help. Find sign up forms at http://www.fightms.com. But remember, FREE sign-up is for today only!

Let's end MS in our lifetime. Come on and take a FREE ride

Last Fall, I helped out a bit with the grand opening of something really for our kids...the Norfolk School Of Rock. My friends Skip and Kathleen Locke brought their vision to the old Eagleton's Art at 430 Boush St. in Norfolk. Nowadays they call it Eagleton Hall. They are a year-round school that offers a boot-camp type curriculum in performance rocking. The school year can really fill-up with extra-curriculars, but if your kids are ready to rock, Summer Camp at the School of Rock could be just what Dr. Feelgood ordered.

Last year Colby rocked it out at the School of Rock Summer Camp. He was a vocalist (though he did get to play some bongos every once in a while). The summer camp is done in partnership with Norfolk Academy and is presented as part of the Summer@theAcademy camps. Legendary local drummer/musician Steve Archer heads up the camps as well as the School of Rock itself downtown. He and his staff get kids with a rock and roll dream onto the stage and pumped through the amps. It's a great introduction to the Rock And Roll Lifestyle, only in a kid-friendly way. Only Gatorade and M&M's backstage.

If you want to look into Summer Camp, or the school itself, log onto http://www.schoolofrock.com/norfolk/summer_school.php or simply contact Kathleen. Phone 757-961-7626 or email kslocke@schoolofrock.com

The Country Chooses…Country

Well, conservative America has spoken, and the families that love American Idol love Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.

As an avid American Idol fan, I enjoy the show each season, but I'm a little surprised at this pairing. This isn't Nashville Star after all. Both seem to be great kids, but not only are they both cut from conservative country cloth, a person of their combined age could still compete on Idol. They are the youngest finalists in the show's history. That fact alone is a shocker to me because to get to the finals, they have to have beaten dozens if not hundreds or thousands of others with MUCH more experience, both in vocal delivery and stage presence. I still think a Pia/James final would have been off the grid, but America has chosen two really good-hearted and talented kids. Not to take away from Haley Reihnart. Given her late surge with the judges and her dynamics on stage in contrast to the country kids, I felt she would be a finalist. The previous week, she avoided the bottom two. America seemed to be warming up to her thanks to stunning performances of "House Of The Rising Sun" and "I (Who Have Nothing)". Despite me always preferring rocker James Durbin over Haley, I'll miss her spark in the final, which I fear may be sort of a yawn-fest. I think even the Idol judges have got to feel a bit of that too. They are always quick to remind though that this is a SINGING contest, and there is no doubt that these kids can sing. After Pia was cast off, I immediately chose Lauren and James in the final. For that reason, I am still sticking with the young lady from Georgia. Her homecoming segment was moving, especially her interaction with families that lost so much in recent tornadoes which ripped up communities she knows well. She is colorful and spunky and real. Her voice soars like a beautiful bird. Scotty will be fine...as long as he steers clear of Lady Gaga.

Have a great weekend.

Eric

Remembering St. Helens

Growing up in Oregon you become accustomed to seeing the beautiful Cascade range...the endless row of snow-capped volcanic peaks that run from Canada down to Northern California. Mt. Baker, Ranier, Adams, Hood, Shasta. But most famous of them all is of course St. Helens, and all because of that day in May.

Yesterday marked 31 years since the lava dome exploded on the mountain, sheering well over 1000 feet off the snowy peak, and leveling thousands of square miles of pristine northwest beauty. I was 18 when it happened, but every year when May 18th rolls around, I still think back on where I was when it happened. It was one of those global events that you always attach where you were when you got the news. Kennedy. Moonwalk. Challenger. 9/11. Tsunamis. I was actually working in D.C. at the time for Senator Bob Packwood. I worked in his press department, and one of my jobs was to file important newspaper clippings from back home. I was there when I heard the news, and in the days that followed I read each story that profiled the toll, the damage, the ash. My hometown of Roseburg, Oregon was easily out of the path of the gritty ash being 250 miles to the southwest...or was it. A couple of days later, I filed a story in the Christian Science Monitor that quoted "the explosion was felt as far south as Roseburg, Oregon." The ash followed, and the story that really hit home. A friend of mine named Paul Nickell informed me that his parents were among the 57 who perished on the mountain that day.

For those that remember, the mountain had spent months in the headlines with earthquakes, tremors and the building of the lava dome signaling danger. But over time, the story just blended into the background as all the warnings didn't seem to lead to the cataclysmic event the USGS folks said might happen. "Blue" and "Red" zones which had been established to prevent people from entering harms way were gradually lifted and hikers and campers began to reenter the region to get a closer look at the spectacle. Paul's folks, avid outdoor enthusiasts, had driven their motor home into the blue zone while passing through the area. They were on their way to a festival in Wenatchee, WA, but thought they would take a few pictures of St. Helens....many miles from the growing dome. But it didn't matter. The unthinkable happened. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dill and many others were never found. Of course on the other side of this tragedy is the profit thousands have continued to derive from tourist curiosity in the years that followed...from dynamic photography of the before and after, to crude "Mt. St. Helens Ash" paper weights and animal figurines.

Thirty-one years can dim the vividness of many moments of life, but some events are just too big. If you grew up here on the east coast, I can see how the event was "a long ways away" and therefore lacked the kind of clarity that helps an image last. The internet was a decade from its birth, and camera phones were even further off, disallowing the immediacy we can capture today, but for those of us who took in the beauty of the great Pacific Northwest, May 18, 1980 will be a date for the ages.

I played Bowling For Soup's hit "1985" this morning. Reminded me of an interesting note. You know how pro athletes all hope for a second career as a TV color commentator or analyst? I think we all would love a lucrative second opportunity we could just step into with little more than a good name. Radio certainly has prepared me well for my second career as a voice actor. Well in the tough world of hit-making, Randy Newman and Danny Elfman have certainly set the bar with even bigger careers as film scorers, but one-hit-wonders listen up...Kids = Ca$h.

Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo has known the truth for decades. You may love songs like "Whip It" and "Girl U Want," but his themes for kids shows like Rugrats, Clifford The Big Red Dog and Pee-Wee's Playhouse have really helped him make his mark. He worked on countless Nickelodeon shows (and still does) and has raked in millions. Like Oingo Boingo's Elfman, Mothersbaugh has parlayed the TV work into big-screen scoring as well, but he knows what butters his bread. Bowling For Soup is too. Being labeled a "one-hit wonder" can cripple a career, but if you are a fan of Disney XD's "Phineas and Ferb" you hear BFS every time the show comes on. It's one of Colby's favorite cartoons, and I love the clever scriptwriting, but the catchy theme song may not be garnering Bowling For Soup big time downloads on iTunes, but I'm sure the royalties are helping pay for their next album or tour. I find myself scanning the credits at the end of the shows for familiar popsters. Were you a fan of the band Jellyfish? Back a few years when my time on 93.7 was as Coast morning guy, songs like "That Is Why," "The King Is Half-Undressed," and "The Ghost At Number One" got lots of local airplay. Wonder where they went? Well lead vocalist Andy Sturmer composed and performs the theme to another Disney XD show called "Kick Buttowski." It's a far cry from the music I'd like to be hearing from Sturmer, but I'm thrilled to know he is still getting work. In a few years, maybe he transitions to film and picks up an Oscar for a Pixar film. Move over Randy Newman and Mr. Elfman.

Anyhoo, just a note to those who find this stuff kind of interesting. Your favorite artists who once churned out car tunes just might have made the switch to cartoons!

It really is amazing how universal Bob is. Of course I know how Bob-FM is a favorite of all ages, but it really is odd how our culture is surrounded by Bob. It doesn't matter if you are driving down the road and see a vanity plate that says BOB ROX, your new favorite animated show is "Bob's Burgers," or if you are watching the local news, Bob is everywhere.

How many of you saw the coverage on last night's news and thought the same thing? There I was, enjoying a scallop and sun-dried shish-ka-BOB, when WAVY reporters showed up at a Portsmouth home to cover a tree-climbing, nap loving BOBcat at the home of Kenneth Graham. Even stranger was the fact that not only did Bob get a plug, I kind of did too, basically in the same breath. "The Game Warden verified that it is actually a bobcat. I was amazed to have it in my backyard!" Ok, well the spelling may not be the same, but I've been creating art under the name Game Worden for over 20 years! Face it...it's a Bob world. Hottest new rapper? B.o.B. Still your kid's favorite Nick cartoon? SpongeBOB. Best place to practice with your firearm? Bob's. Subliminally of course, it's like free advertising for your favorite radio station. Just reiterates our owner's genius.

Need some reggae?

Considering a new hairdo?

Great music variety?

Bob is the answer!

Quite A Week For This Dad

For those who have listened to me for a few years, you know how much I love being a dad. I've had all three of my kids co-host with me on the morning show over the years. Well, for this dad, the week could not have ended better.

In the days leading up to the weekend, you may have read blogs here profiling my oldest son Andrew and daughter Peyton. Drew had gotten some press in the Pilot prior to the Beer Festival and Peyton had a banner week having led her girls soccer team to their Conference Tournament Championship while also picking up awards for All-Conference and Tournament MVP. Not to be out-done, Colby put another one out of the park yesterday at Fleet Park to help key another amazing baseball win. You have read about C's little league team, the Bob-FM Cardinals here before, but the kid loves the game, and has in addition, joined the Norfolk Destroyers AAU team. Yesterday the Destroyers hosted the Yorktown Renegades in a pre-season double-header. The Destroyers got hammered in the first game 9-1, but in game two, Colby got Norfolk on the board in the second inning with a lead-off homer that cleared the right-center fence. Proud dad got to see the kid park one for the second time at Fleet Park, the first coming last May. The Destroyers thus picked up the pace, falling behind, but coming back in dramatic fashion to win the second game 8-7 in extra innings. Winning pitcher Andrew Califano also had a crucial bat, knocking a triple and scoring the winning run on a Peyton Simpson single to right field. Just an exciting thing to see such amazing chapters in our kids' lives.

Sheesh, my kids are beating the pants off of me in the P.R. department!

Maybe I should just get used to it and become their agent

Love you kids, oceans

I just don't get it. Obviously neither do the judges, as once again America has dropped the ball on a supertalent. Like Pia Toscana, James Durbin has been vanquished from the stage on American Idol.

What do I know? Talented folks are a dime a dozen right? This year's crop of talent though all seemed to have the chops to become much more than an Idol footnote. Not a Sanjaya in the lot. I shouldn't be dismayed by a top three that includes Scotty McCreey, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart, they are all blessed with incredible ability, but the spark of the show this year was the dynamism brought by artists like James and Casey. Even the stage presence of Stefano raised the bar on performance. Pyrotechnics aside, James so surpassed all the hype created by former Idol rocker of note, Adam Lambert. His range was amazing at each end, and his story is one of victory as James put a new face on Tourette's syndrome and autism. He had the ability, the look, and the attitude that Idol is all about, and the judges were in his corner. But like Pia, America dispatched the uber-talent, deciding James would not enjoy the rare air of the top three. No "Hometown Hero" welcome via private jet. No parade. No cheerleaders. No key to the city. No throwing out the first pitch for the local minor league team. While James is juggling offers to appear on Ellen, Dave, Jay, Conan, Today, SNL...I hope he also gets a call from Chris Daughtry to remind him that he too was eliminated in the same round in Idol season five and his career seems no worse for the wear. I hope Fox and Idol give a little kickback to these artists whose downloads from the show are generating millions, because Durbin deserves a heck of a lot more than a spot on the summer Idols tour. In my humble opinion, the show just lost the steam that would drive record ratings.

While a Pia-James showdown in the final would have been sweet, my pick now has to go to Lauren Alaina. A bit goofy on camera perhaps, but she has great stage presence and a voice that has had the ear of Steven Tyler since day one. It's looking more and more like a country showdown at Idol Corale. Curious to see what America will choose. Darkhorse Haley may have some tricks up her sleeve.

James Durbin. Maybe I'm Amazed? No "maybe" about it.

I've been watching the progress for weeks. The sign went up. Then the groundskeepers got to work, then the tent rose from the earth. And now is the time...to get...your GREEK on!

Thom Vourlas just dropped by the studio with his tidy container of Greek sweet treats. I'm in heavenopolis. Honestly it's one of the best community celebrations in the 757. Culture, dancing, tradition, amazing Greek Food and music. All under one of Hampton Roads’ biggest tents on the grounds of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk. The fest begins Thursday May 12 and will run through Sunday , May 15. The Norfolk Greek Festival is Tidewater's oldest and largest ethnic festival, and also features arts and crafts, beautiful jewelry, tours of the Cathedral, and the very popular Drive-Thru. All proceeds from the festival benefit the Cathedral's Ministries as well as local community charities.

Chance of rain? YOU'RE COVERED! And I guarantee there is nothing that will improve your world like Loukoumades. Honey-glazed morsels deep-friend and served hot with a toothpick. OMG! I love Souvlaki, but life has more meaning with Loukoumades in it!

For more information, log onto http://www.norfolkgreekfestival.com or give 'em a call at 440-0500. Grab the kids. Colby, Peyton and I will meet you there and say.....

Yesterday's blog featured some proud poppa moments about my oldest son Andrew. You've read some of the baseball exploits of my young prodigy Colby. Now the spotlight turns to brown...Peyton Brown...my daughter, and striker for the varsity soccer team at First Baptist Christian School in Suffolk. Champions of the 7 Cities Conference!

Peyton is a Senior this year, having transferred to FCB in her sophomore year. The transition was not an easy one, but here we are in the last semester and I am proud to count among her accomplishments an outstanding GPA, Varsity Vollyballer, Homecoming Court, All American status as a cheerleader (cheered at halftime of the Pro Bowl in Honolulu earlier this year), and now add to that, All Conference in Soccer and Tournament MVP, in addition to the Conference Championship. Following her beautiful prom on Saturday, this has been quite a week.

I met Helena Peyton Brown walking on the sand at Duck-In when she was two. Her life was just beginning...and while genetically I have only been able to generate boys, I have been eternally blessed by this young lady. As a step-father, I was so proud to join Ray and Angie Brown on the sidelines along with sister Masie. Not always are relationships as good across the lines drawn by marriages that don't quite work out, but being there as a collective, with our little girl all grown up was just amazing. We open doors for our children all our lives, but eventually they start to open their own, and this was a really big door. Big enough for an entire squad of girls who believed. That may seem redundant given she attends a Christian school, but the will to win when you are the underdog requires a different kind of belief. And while they are quick to give God credit as many athletes do in post-game interviews, this is a quality shared by true champions. Of course the Crusaders were champions well before the trophy ceremony, but the halls of the school will forever have this shiny reminder of what a group of gals pulled off one sunny afternoon in May of 2011. We all want to leave our mark in this short stay. Well, I was there to see a really big one...and I'm sure there are many more to follow...after all, Peyton's life is just beginning...again.

Way to go Crusaders!!!

Back in the day, we used to call them microbrews. Homebrew before that. Now it's Craft Beers. Fancy huh? Well, for those who read the big spread in the Pilot Business section on Sunday, you may have noticed the topic has landed my oldest son Andrew in print. He's one up on me!

I found it pretty cool to find the banner story in the section centered on The Birch, a retro cool bar and casual restaurant located around the corner from Tortilla West in Norfolk's Lambert's Point. What was really cool is that Drew had taken me there with the fam the night before, so all the images on the page were fresh in my brain. The writers of the story gained comments from numerous folks on the popularity of local brewers like Hampton's St. Georges Brewing, Williamsburg AleWerks, Beach Brewing in VB, and upstart O'Connor Brewing in Norfolk. The topic itself is close to Andrew's heart, as he has held bar at Cogan's in Ghent for years pouring pints and pulling time as an associate manager. He know his product. Nice job bud, and I don't mean Bud. Though Drew admitted that PBR and Bud Light brands still fill the most pints, the dozen or so craft taps they have account for 65%-75% of total beer sales, and that number is on the rise. The Birch has 21 taps, and not a mainstream brew in the lot. It must be a hot topic, just last week I got a text from a friend of mine who wanted help in naming their new brewery that is in the works. I suggested Bob Beer. REJECTED IMMEDIATELY. Come on! "We Brew Anything" doesn't work for you?

Maybe it's just that we are all getting a little thirsty knowing summer's heat and humidity is just around the corner, but believe me there was none of that when I lived in Portland, Oregon in the late 80's when the Widmer Brothers were rolling out their first barrels of Hefeweizen. Craft beers are a true art form, and I commend all those hopped up about becoming the next Dogfish Head...especially my friends getting ready to brew Bob Beer

Wanna get real crafty? Don't miss this Saturday's Virginia Beer Festival at Town Point Park. Enjoy 125 taps, great food, and live music. Get ticket info and more at http://www.festevents.org.

Cheers,

Walking The Gosport With Mom

I guess I really have been uneasy about the approach of Mother's Day. It is the first one I will spend without my mom. Her name was Martha Karen Worden, and for the first time in half of a century, she will not be by my side or at least at the other end of a phone call. Mother's day this year falls eight months to the day after mom passed away, but I'm going to celebrate just like we did last year and the year before, and the year before. Brunch at Brutti's and a stroll down High St. in Olde Towne for the Gosport Arts Festival.

The Gosport is 41 years old this year, and you owe it to your mom and yourself to take part in such a great art show. This year over 150 artists of all mediums will display their passion as they again shut down High Street and showcase some of the finest art in the community, region and country. Great food, live music and activities for the kids await, and if you have not picked up something for Mom, let her choose from the endless options. This is what I did last year, and Mom selected a beautiful shawl made by an artist from the Eastern Shore. It will always remain one of my fondest memories. Go and make some for yourself and your family. Festival hours are Saturday and Sunday 10-6. While you are there, look for the Bob-FM table and pick up one of our new 97.7 oval stickers for your ride.

You only have one Mom. Tell her you love her with a one of a kind piece of art from the Gosport Arts Festival. I know Karen would be proud of you. Get more information online at http://www.gosportartsfestival.com.

I'll see you there!

So it's Cinco De Mayo. Not really so much a day of Mexican independence, but rather an excuse to drink a lot of beer. Honestly, the battle of which the 5th of May is celebrated did end with a Mexican victory over the better numbered, better armed French on this day in 1862, though it hardly was the entire Mexican nation under siege by Napoleon and his troops. Still, the complexion of this American South could have ended much differently had France won and continued on in their plans to aid the Confederacy. Certainly would have given the Civil War a slightly different vibe. Plus the Grays may have dined on foie gras instead of hardtack. At Appomattox, Grant would have perhaps asked Lee to pass the Grey Poupon instead of his sword. And, if that had been the case, no doubt they would not have shared a case...though it would no doubt have been Kronenbourg rather than Dos Equis, as Mexico would not have won, and to this day, beer vendors would have to lament the loss of another brewer's marketing boon, leaving the spoils to organizers of Super Bowl and St. Patty's celebrations.

Still, the image of Grant and Lee sharing a Corona and lime is kind of nice. More brews...Less bruise.

Let me know if you need a designated driver. I'll come and pick you up. It's how we celebrate Cinco De Bob-O,

It's a pretty ugly day, so I'm going to keep it short today and just give you some words to put it all in perspective. I'm from Oregon, so "ugly" doesn't really ever apply to me. Rain can create some amazing contrasts in our views of our world. It can be a nuisance sometimes, and flooding is not laughing matter, but any day on this side of the soil is a good one. Which leads me to a telling quote from late singer/songwriter Warren Zevon.

Zevon was far more than a footnote in rock. Lots more than a one-hit-wonder. For those who only chose to know him for "Werewolves Of London" they missed out on a clever, smart and critically lauded artist and commentator. More sarcastic than Jackson Browne but less volatile than Henry Rollins, Zevon was a favorite of David Letterman, and when Warren was diagnosed with terminal cancer and decided to forgo treatment in lieu of exiting on his own terms, Letterman invited him onto the show as his solitary guest. Warren played live and chatted with DL all night. It was a class move for the Late Night host, and it resulted in three words to live by. Three words that may not sum up what life is, but leaves you chuckling as a dead man walking laughed back at death with those things that will outlive all of us. What we write down.

"Enjoy every sandwich."

More than bravery. Brilliance.

Dateline: Fleet Park - Monday night under the lights - Norfolk Naval Base.

For the second game in a row, the Bob-FM Little League Cardinals took a lead late into the game, only to see the game slip away on Monday night. Just days after dropping a heart-breaker to the undefeated Red Sox, the Cards led till the end, with the Wood Vending Mets scoring 4 runs in the 6th to win 14-10. It was tight all the way, and the Cardinals looked good in the 5th when they loaded the bases and brought my boy Colby to the plate. The stage was set for real diamond drama as Colby, hot off a three-game home run streak, crushed a ball to deep right center, but the fielders were back and settled under the ball to secure the out. The Mets played hard with clutch play from Aidan and Andrew and great motivation from Coach Califano. Mets sponsor Tom Simpson looked on proudly as his son Peyton rocked it at first base and at the bat. My kudos go to our pitchers C.J., Samuel and Monroe, who threw strikes and showed real leadership. We're gonna need good pitching to get by the Nationals on Thursday night. If you wanna come and catch exciting Bob-FM Cardinals action, game time is 6pm at Fleet Park!

Way to go Cardinals and Mets! Great game!

Lots of news this week. Deadly storms. A Royal Wedding. Bin Laden. Such contrast. Tears of sadness. Tears of joy. Tears that never will stop.

There will be many stories and opinions to follow-up all three of these topics, especially the last one, so I am not here to pontificate. I just want to thank all of our military friends and families for their sacrifice. The commitment. The deployments. The victories. The loss. And as I think about the morning I was on the air here on 9/11, before we really knew much of Al-Quaida, I want to send out special prayers to not only the families of those lost on that day and families impacted by our far-reaching military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan in the aftermath, but those touched by the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa and the 2000 attack on the Norfolk-based destroyer Cole. I am not sure even an event like this brings closure to any of these folks and locals, but let's all just reach out to those we know in these groups and remind them that we will never, ever forget their sacrifice...their non-stop reminder that our freedom is not free.

Thank you so much, and God bless all of you.

It's Friday. Glad the weekend is almost here and really grateful the ugly storms that swept through the South largely spared Hampton Roads. Good to see the sunshine back as we head into the weekend. Special thanks to all the restaurants who participated in last night's Dine Out For AIDS event. Thanks to the storm passing quickly and somewhat quietly, thousands of you headed out to make the most out of your meal. I dined at Jack's off of Laskin Rd. (former Coyote Cafe) and have to applaud their staff. Not only were they rocking last night, but had to staff a BREAKFAST at 4:30 this morning! The place was packed out for the Royal Wedding. Holy clotted cream! In case you missed it...here are some little known facts about Big Willie and Kate's royal throwdown.

-Medals worn on Prince Phillip's uniform...all made of Belgian Chocolate
-A total of 13 eye injuries were reported in Westminster Abbey due to unusually large and pointy hats
-Large and pointy hat display a fashion boon of ideas for Lady GaGa
-Most dynamic of all camera angles in the Abbey provided by the Gargoyle Cam
-Queen Elizabeth II...resplendent in all yellow...still resembled a large stick of butter
-Kate, a vegetarian, flashed moments of nervousness when surrounded by Beefeaters
and just one more...
-Musical entertainment at Royal Reception provided by Train after the bride drug them around all day...

Idol injustice! Casey Abrams is out! Certainly the most interesting of the Idol top six, if not the most entertaining, Casey's growl and uniqueness will be seen no more :( Scotty and Jacob joined him in the bottom three, but no judges could save Casey this time. Many may say he'll find a good gig like Pia no doubt will, but I'm really not sure what niche Casey will fill. Something tells me he will slide into relative obscurity as a rock and roll footnote. He is nearly as talented as a session player or a comedian. One thing for sure, his version of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho" was a real treat and he will be missed. James Durbin is still my choice for winner of this year's Idol. He simply is amazing.

And one final note from Cecil...longtime Bob-FM listener. He calls every month or so with some one-liners and I have to share this as I close. "What do you do if you are attacked by Clowns?"

Go for the juggler

Ha! Thanks Cecil...let's have a safe weekend...I'll be live at Bay Kia this afternoon 4-6pm and tomorrow morning 10am-noon at the Blocker YMCA with Colby. Come down and bring the kids...LETS PLAY!...and don't forget to Keep Your Knob On Bob!

Your morning pal,

Food fight! No Bluto, this is not your invitation to be a zit, but it is an invitation to fight the good fight in our community. The common ingredient? Food!

First off, tonight is the 8th annual Dining Out For Life. A time when you can "make one meal matter" in the lives of men, women and children in Hampton Roads struggling with H.I.V. and AIDS. All participating restaurants will donate a minimum of 25% of their sales to ACCESS AIDS Care on this special evening. All of the proceeds raised from Dining Out For Life stay in Hampton Roads and will benefit over 500 individuals and families served by ACCESS AIDS Care in our community. Log onto http://www.accessaids.org for a complete list of participating restaurants or to sign up to participate. You can get more information about the event by calling Kandis Burnsworth at 757-640-0929.

Secondly, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia is always in need of non-perishable food to help the hungry here in our own back yard. Every effort counts and I want to give a Bob-FM shout to the kids participating today in a food drive at Volvo Penta in Chesapeake. Employees there are highlighting "Bring Your Kids To Work Day" with a food drive from 11:30am-1:00pm at 1300 Volvo Penta Drive (intersection of Volvo Pkwy and Crossways). The kids have a goal of 500 lbs. of food and will be set up to receive your donations in the 1400 building parking lot. For every FIVE items you bring in you will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing at the end of the day.The WINNER will receive a goodie bag full of Volvo Penta gear AND a $25 gift card. Get more info by calling 757-436-2800.

And lastly, my pal Christine Neikirk sent me something to put on your schedule for May, Jamestown Crescent in the Larchmont neighborhood in Norfolk will be host to this year's Tour de Cuisine - an unique home tour that includes samplings from some of the areas top restaurants. Last year the event sold out. Tickets are available at http://www.kingsdaughters.org/tourdecuisine or by calling Lisa Coleman at 757-668-7098. All proceeds of course benefit CHKD.

Remember, whenever you need some help doing good in our community...drop me a line to eric@937bobfm.com and I'll try to include you in my blog! Now if you don't mind, I'm getting a little hungry talking about all this food...

One Ka-BOB! Order up!

So I stayed up real late last night so I could watch "The Voice" on NBC. Being an Idol fan, was curious if the latest modern version of Star Search would up the bar. Answer: Not a chance...at least after night one. I do like the panel, and their diversity gives a lot of genres to shine. Ultimately it will be the public that decides who gets record contract (whatever that is worth these days). Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and country's Blake Shelton will "coach" the cream of the crop, though through night one, I have heard nearly nothing to compete with the Idol top 13. The idea of a "Blind Audition" I think is great, because so much is truly about "The Voice." It was also great to see people with a dream that don't fit the typical star "package" to get some TV face-time. I find Carson Daly about as engaging and passionate as a sugar beet. Not that I could do any better, but like Seacrest, I just wish these talent shows could find someone a little less self-absorbed and polished. Who would I suggest? Heck I don't know, but I hear Katie Couric will soon be free to explore, and at least she is a UVA alum! I guess I'll reserve judgement until the second episode reveals the other talent in the pool, but in the meantime I'm gearing up for the top 6 on Idol this week as they tackle classics from Carole King. As for the coming talent glut of "X Factor" and the next installment of "America's Got Talent," I think I may end up watching re-runs of The Gong Show.

Too much of a good thing anyone?

Peace ouch!

Man it's great to be back at Harbor Park. Just something really cool about hanging out with your kids, spitting seeds and catching some rays (and the periodic foul ball). Baseball is back at Harbor Park, and although the opening home stand started kind of slow, it wrapped up nicely yesterday with a mid-day win over the Durham Bulls. Josh Bell homered from both sides of the plate as the Tides won it 5-2. Even cooler, a high school fundraiser turned the outing into a double-header as Granby and Maury tangled in the pre-summer sun immediately following the Tides game. Granby hammered out five runs in the first inning, but a steady and swift response by Maury, led by three early RBI by Adam Radford, turned into a Commodores win 9-8 over the Comets.

Not only were these talented young man fortunate to be able to play on such an amazing stage, we are lucky to have such an amazing stadium. Lets remember to get out and support the Tides this spring and summer. So many major league all-stars have called Norfolk home over the decades...come and see tomorrows superstars today. Their next home stand begins May 5th v.s. Indianapolis. Get ticket and scheduling info at http://www.norfolktides.com.

P.S. Rip Tide's favorite radio station is Bob-FM!

Spring Break Is Done…Bring On The Bob Summer!

Welcome back to a new week! For many, it's back to a regular schedule after having the kids off for Spring Break, though you wouldn't know it by the weather. With highs near 90 today, it's a summer-like day to kick off the last week in April. Speaking of summer, another summer concert date was added to the roster of prime shows coming to Farm Bureau Live at the Va. Beach Amphitheater. Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10am for 311/Sublime & Rome, who will hit the beach on July 28th. Make sure and check our concert calendar for all the great shows, including this Friday's Steve Miller show at the Ted. Keep listening for your tickets to win Steve Miller tickets on Bob-FM. And speaking of live music, I just want to give a plug to a cool new band I saw at ODU's Webb Center on Saturday night. River James is a new four-piece Virginia-based band. My friend Jacob Marshall (former drummer for the amazing indie-senstation MAE) is hammering out the beats for this amazing group. Considering it was only their 11th gig, they are tight and sounding great. Vocalist Vince Scheuerman formerly of D.C.-based band Army Of Me fronts the band. Their sound is progressive-indie with the ability to jam hard or scale it back to just acoustic guitar and vocal. They are heading to Nashville soon to record a full-length disc, but in the meantime, you can download "Fragile" and "Arlington" on their website. Log onto http://www.riverjamesmusic.com. Make sure and sign up for their mailing list and check concert gigs on the horizon. You're gonna love River James.

Bring on the music (just don't forget the sunscreen!).

Have a great week, and keep your Knob on Bob

...but not just the one who birthed you! Today is Earth Day, and Bob-FM reminds you to think green, because Earth Day isn't just one day a year...it's a state of mind! Reduce, reuse, recycle. Three simple words, but boy can we give Mother Earth a break if we just employ some of these thoughts EVERY day of the year. Use that recycling bin...take an insulated coffee cup to your favorite coffee shop...and conserve water. Got some leftover water bottles with 1/3 of the bottle still partially filled? Don't dump it out...use it to water your houseplants or re-fill your pets' water bowl! Together we can make a HUGE difference.

On a personal note, in addition to being Earth day, it is my eldest son Drew's Birthday. Happy 29th my amazing son (but this is the ONLY time you can legitimately say you are 29...all the years you claim this age down the road are LIES! LIES I TELL YOU!!!). Drew is an exceptional boy, man, husband, father and musician. If you want to enjoy some of his blue-eyed soul, find him at http://www.myspace.com/drewworden. Love you oceans buddy. Always will.

And since we are talking about celebrating Earth Day, animal conservation counts too. Saturday, why don't you party with the animals at the Virginia Zoo. The Virginia Zoo will host its annual Party for the Planet 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow. Party for the Planet will bring out visitors' wild side as we celebrate Earth Day and animal enrichment. Visitors will learn about conservation steps they can take to protect habitat locally and worldwide. They will also see how zookeepers use enrichment to encourage our animals' natural behavior, keeping them healthy and happy, and have opportunities to play with enrichment items we give animals ranging from otters to elephants. Activities and exhibits will include educational talks at select animal habitats; informational presentations, animal enrichment activities and crafts at the event pavilion; and Balinese music performances at the entrance to Asia - Trail of the Tiger by Gamelan Raga Kusuma, a community ensemble from Richmond. Party for the Planet event activities are included with general admission. For more Zoo info, log onto http://www.virginiazoo.org.

Have a blessed Easter everyone

And then there were seven.

Who will get the boot tonight on Idol? Last night's offering featuring songs of the 21st Century was very good, but Jacob Lusk's choice of "Dance With My Father" may just leave him out of luck. The song's familiarity issues may cost him as it did Pia Toscana two weeks ago. With all the comparisons to Luther Vandross, tackling one of his songs may have been a tactical mistake. The performance was emotional, but lacked the "pow" the judges are looking for this late in the game. Scotty McCreery opened the show with John Anderson's country classic "Swingin'" and delivered in his usual solid, smiling style, but I'm predicting he will be in the bottom three this week. I just don't know how Scotty can elevate his game more than where he is. He is consistent, but will never work the stage like Stefano. Senor Langone was all over the stage last night and should avoid the bottom three with his solid cover of Ne-Yo's "Closer." He was confident and focused throughout and the crowd and judges approved...and not just Ms. Lopez. She was taken by Casey Abrams on this night, who rocked with Maroon 5's "Harder To Breath" ending with a kiss on Jennifer's cheek. He's an enigma, and he deserves a trip back next week. Haley Reinhart is my other prediction for the bottom three. Her version of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" was compelling and sung well. The drama factor was as it should be, but she looked like her usual bubbly self out there. Curly hair and red dress? The song is about rejection, and her physical reflection needed to be darker. Black dress, straight hair and a selling of the sadness. She needed to take a wardrobe tip from James Durbin who stole the show with his theatrical and thrilling delivery of Muse's hit "Uprising." His military motif and knee-high boots had Steven Tyler green with envy. He looked the part and rocked it hard. The kid is still my pick for the final. His opponent still seems to possibly be Lauren Alaina, whose natural talents were lauded by all three judges. She seems to lack some self confidence, but her continued ability to avoid the bottom three through solid performances should give her a boost, as her version of Sara Evans' "Born To Fly" was another song choice that fit like a glove.

I'm a dork.

Fore!

Just a small note to thank all those who participated in yesterday's 13th annual Mike Cavish Golf Tournament. What a blast as once again Dan O'Boyle and his fine staff at Elizabeth Manor Country Club hosted one of the best benefit outings of the year. EVMS's Harry Lester teed it up with Ghent business leaders and dozens of others to raise thousands of valuable dollars to use in the Strelitz Diabetes Institute's pursuit of a cure for one of mankind's most preventable enemies. Special thanks to Donna and all the Cavish family and employees at Fellini's for the hospitality at the even-ending dinner, which for the 13th year, I have been honored to host. For those local sponsors who ponied up sign-up and fees, along with businesses who gave freely to the raffle, along with the silent and live auctions, thank you so much for your continued support for this event and the ongoing mission to find an end to diabetes. I even won an Italian Ice a day from Rita's! The food was great, the waitstaff was attentive, and all you friends making a difference was the best! Sign-ups begin soon for the Cavish 14th Annual tourney...log onto http://www.evms.org/cavish for more. See you there!

Now if you don't mind, I have a lunch-date with a sugar-free Tangarine Italian Ice.

Keep your Knob on Bob!

While rain washed out the Tides home-opener Saturday night, the Bob-FM Little League Cardinals evened up their early season record to 2-2 at Fleet Park Saturday mid-day. My growing Colby got the start on the mound and effectively shut down the Braves leaving the mound with a 9-1 lead. Colby cushioned his own cause with a career day at the plate, going 3-for-3 including two 3-run homers and a 2-run triple! The Braves mounted a firm comeback, but defensive plays including game-savers by Carter and C.J. set up Monroe for the save as he struck out the last Brave batter for the win! Final score: Cards 11 Braves 7!

Any other proud Little League parents out there who want to send some baseball highlights...feel free to email me at eric@937bobfm.com

Yeah I watch it. Tenth season...what do you think? Best season yet? The top 10 were all amazing talents. Still think it is a crime America sent Pia Toscano home last week. She could have won it all. I have felt that it had to be a gal this year. The guys have been dominating. Now I'm not sure who I really think has what it takes. If bottom three appearances are any indication, Stefano has got to be feeling the heat. Haley too. I'm still a huge Casey Abrams fan. I just find him refreshing. Odd, but refreshing. He may not have the image most people think of for the American Idol, but you can't deny his talent. His soulful voice and amazing musicianship on that standup bass give him points in my book that the others can't touch. Now that Paul McDonald is no longer blinding us with his dentures, I would imagine Scotty may be next on the bubble. He is quite likable, but somehow I still am getting a cross between George W. Bush and Alfred E. Newman with a Randy Travis voice. Shucks. Jacob Lusk has an amazing voice, and will likely have a great career in soul and gospel. He could be the heir-apparent to the Luther Vandross throne, but I don't think he's the best of the best. James Durbin may be the man to beat. His story is compelling and his range to rock is sonic and sweet. Can you imagine a duet with Tyler on "Dream On?" Big smile and a show-stopper, James has drawn comparisons to Adam Lambert, but James isn't so bent on the rouge and eye liner. The masses could buy-in, 'cause Durbin is all-in. With Pia gone, it seems the guys have it stacked, but of the remaining two songbirds, Lauren Alaina could be the long shot that shocks the world. There is a lot of Kelly Clarkson in that girl. She is engaging and has adapted to the various genres well. She also has never been in the bottom three. Haley Reinhart has been there three times and cant get by on rasp alone. My prediction? James and Lauren in the final. If my prediction comes true, I'll give my pick to win at that time. Let's see how the top seven handle the songs of the 21st century.

Let's dim the lights!

Hey, your morning guy Eric here...just a reminder again that TODAY is the day for the annual drive for the Bone Marrow Registry at the College of William and Mary! Again it's the 20th anniversary year that the university has participated in a massive drive to come to the rescue of those suffering with leukemia and other blood-borne diseases. The registry gives those waiting for a miracle MATCH the best chance of finding a life-saving donor. FOUR matches have already been found as the result of PEOPLE LIKE YOU! It is truly a chance for you to save a person's life! This year their goal is the most ambitious yet...to register 1500 new potential donors. Usually there is a registration cost of $67 per person to register, but thanks to the students at W&M, fundraising efforts throughout the year are geared to cover the cost, so there is no expense to you This year's drive takes place TODAY (April 13th) and it has grown to be the biggest collegiate bone marrow drive in the nation! Anyone 18-60 from the Bob-FM listening area is welcome to come and help. For details please log onto http://wmpeople.wm.edu/site/page/bonemarrowdrive

Now for the CATCH portion of today's blog. If you've been waiting to get glimpse of the Bob-FM Little League Cardinals, tonight will be a great night to catch them in action! In our third game of the season, the Cards will take on the always-tough Yankees. Game time is 6:00pm at Fleet Park (Hampton Blvd. in Norfolk on the outskirts of the Navy Base). Just look for the kid-pitch minors field. The Cards are 1-1 and are looking for their second straight victory! I'll be the one coaching first base and spittin' sunflower seeds!

Your pal Eric here, and you know I'm always trying to encourage all of us to do something good for our community...well, I received an email from a senior at the College of William and Mary this morning and it is definitely worthy of a blog mention.
Game On Bob listeners! While sadness may creep in when coming to grips with the final season at Fleet Park for many Norfolk Little Leaguers, families who have been gathering there for decades will again be all smiles when our kids get out for some of the best chapters of the American Pastime. Proud to say Bob-FM is back again as a sponsor, and even prouder that Colby's kid-pitch Minors team, the Cardinals, are the sponsored team! Thanks also to our co-sponsor Cottman Transmissions of Chesapeake and all the others sponsoring teams and placing banners all over Fleet Park. Bob-FM loves giving back to the community, and I so appreciate the Sinclairs always stepping up to help. Cards are coming off a big win over the Athletics on Saturday. Colby pitched into the fifth inning giving up only one hit and going 3-for-3 at the plate! Proud dad! We hung in for our first win of the season, taking the game 9-6 despite a furious comeback by the A's! 'Course it's all about having fun, though it is nice to get a W. Good luck to all the teams. Let's make this last season the best ever! If you would like to support Fleet Park Little League or find out more information on the season at FP, log onto http://www.eteamz.com/navalbase.

A warm start to another great week here in Hampton Roads!

On today's blog, I just wanted to thank all of our listeners who have "stepped up" to make a difference this week, including the hundreds who turned out yesterday for the Up Center (formerly the Dept. for Children and Family Services). Their 2nd annual "Step Up" event here at Dominion Tower featured stair-climbers from all over the region and raised thousands of dollars for the Up Center. To find out how you can get involved in next year's climb to the top, to volunteer or find other ways on how to help the Up Center, log onto http://www.theupcenter.org.

Another vital service here in Hampton Roads is Prevent Child Abuse Hampton Roads. Each year media-types try their hand at waiting tables for them to raise money. This is the 29th year and I'm proud to be a part. I'll be taking orders starting at 6pm this Thursday the 7th at Baker's Crust in Ghent. Stop by, I'd love to meet you and serve your supper! Big tips are welcome, as they will all go to help prevent child abuse. Holly Williams will be doing the same at Il Giardino's at the Oceanfront. The event is from 6-10 and includes many of the finest eateries in Hampton Roads. Get a full listing of participating restaurants online at http://www.ucantbeatkids.org.

And finally, I just want to thank all of you who helped out with our World Vision Radio-a-Thon last week. I continue to receive some amazing emails from folks who are still getting online and joining me in sponsoring a child in poverty. It is not too late to get involved. I could tell you what a special experience it is to share this experience with my children, but I think I'll let listener Kim Irwin do it. I received this note over the weekend, and I think she says it best...

"Eric, thank you!

Because of your radio efforts on behalf of World Vision you got me thinking. Last night my kids, Madison 6 and Westin 9, and I sponsored Cindy from El Salvador. They had a great time looking through the pictures, they found ownership in choosing who they felt they could connect with. Both the kids couldn't wait to go to school to share this new friend and venture with their teachers. They are also so excited about getting our packets, writing letters (another bonus), and hearing from Cindy directly.

Thanks to you, this is going to be such a wonderful way to teach my children about giving to those less fortunate and about life outside of the US.

Kim Erwin
Madison and Westin's mom

Amazing huh? Please don't hesitate to share the same joy with your kids. The toll-free number is available to us for the rest of this week only. Call 1-866-924-HOPE or find the World Vision link on our homepage. Thanks so much

Have an awesome week, and Keep Your Knob On Bob!A warm start to another great week here in Hampton Roads!

Have an awesome week, and Keep Your Knob On Bob!

Hey friends!

This morning, we are hosting a very special “radio-thon” during my morning show from 5:30am-10:00am supporting World Vision. World Vision is a 60-year-old humanitarian organization providing clean water, food, medical treatment and education to children nearly in 100 countries around the world. Our goal is to secure 130 sponsorships for children in need. You can sponsor a child for just about a buck a day...It's amazing how the change in your pocket can change a life.

World Vision gives 87 cents out of every dollar to these children in poverty stricken countries. Plus, when natural disasters strike, they are first in....last out. World Vision is on the scene in Japan right now. Join me please (I sponsored three myself and LOVE it!) and sponsor a child. It's just over a DOLLAR a day. We can do this! Help us with our goal and sponsor a hungry child now! YOU'RE GONNA FEEL REALLY GOOD!

Log on NOW to http://www.937bobfm.com and find the World Vision link. Or you can call 1-866-924-HOPE.

Thanks so much,

Eric, your friendly neighborhood morning guy

I'm an art freak. Obviously I surround myself with musical art all the time, but I really have to say how much I loved last weekend's Stockley Gardens Fall Art Festival for Hope House Foundation. The weather was immaculate, the cheese steak was steaming, the music was happnin' and the art was FAB! Picked up my yearly Irmaly Brackin piece and discovered some cool new artists including some hearty glass and ironwork from Holly Olinger (Charlottesville) and some mixed-media from Jerry Allen Brem out of Durham. One of these days, I'm gonna have to man a booth myself and sell my colorful gameworden art! Anyhoo, thanks for attending this Bob-Sponsored bi-yearly event and thanks for supporting Hope House. Find out how you can help in their mission at www.hope-house.org.

Speaking of art...with the holidays coming, I want to remind you how cool it is to give art...especially when you make it yourself. d'Art Center is offering a Creatively Fit Workshop soon that just might be the key to you making some cool gifts for giving this year. Of course the d'Artists also peddle their amazing wares from their studios at d'Art Center. Find them in the Selden Arcade in downtown Norfolk or online at www.d-artcenter.org.If you keep your Knob on Bob...Give from the heart with Art!

Peace and Grace...

Eric here again. Hope your last weekend was rejuvenating. Good weekend for 'Skins and Tech fans. The Tribe looked good against 'Nova and we'll be praying the Cavs get it going a little better next against Georgia Tech. Colby and I were in attendance at Scott Stadium when the Seminoles dispatched of UVA, but the weather was sublime. On we went to Wintergreen for some hiking through the fall foliage. It's startin' to turn and the autumn colors on the Blue Ridge and in the Shenandoah Valley will be in full blaze soon! Cool thing is, you can take Bob with you everywhere now with the new Bob-FM app for your iPhone or Blackberry. Get the download for free in your smartphone App Store. Then take Bob along for the ride!

You know I love music, but movies are worthy too for my entertainment buck. Like the theater experience, but I had to shell out some green for Iron Man 2 on DVD/Blu Ray. Downey is brilliant, Rourke is distorted and Favreau delivers...again! By the way, Tony has just named Bob-FM "Official Radio Station of the Stark Expo!" Yeah!

So I’ve been really getting into bacon.

So I've been really getting into bacon. I really don't know what brought it on, though we did have a recent advertising run with our friends at Wright Brand Bacon and it suddenly was top of mind nearly every morning. There's just something about a strip or five of bacon. Colby made me buy some Wright Brand at Farm Fresh. It is extra thick, which is really good...but one thing could make it better....an applewood smoked version. Maybe they already make it...I just need to find it. Bacon. I love just saying it. And I'm not a purist either. I like the more healthful turkey bacon too. The important thing is crispness. I'm ridiculous. Here we are on our newly re-designed site and my first blog is about bacon.

Oh...three things on YouTube that I might suggest. The first has been online for over three years, but it still amazes me. Comedian/Juggler Chris Bliss doing some choreographed juggling to the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End." Find it. Watch it with your kids. It is an instant link. Next, not a huge fan of the flavor of the moment, but Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" set to original Star Trek footage is BRILLIANT. So creative. Love the fact that the web gives those with keen editing skills the opportunity to be heard and seen. Enjoy. Just don't shoot me with your phaser when you can't get the song and images out of your head. And finally, check out my oldest son Drew Worden. He has a couple of clips on YouTube. The one you need to see is not of the best optical or audio quality, but the voice soars! It is shot at this year's acoustic festival at Town Point Park last month. The song is "Thirtysomething." Yeah, I'm really proud. His gift is BETTER than bacon.

Peace and Grace.
